When an idea like Pokémon GO hit the world, everyone knew about it within a matter of hours. EVERYONE. When soldiers wrote letters home during war, the process took several days or weeks (IF the letter got where it was going). Getting a return letter added more time. During most of human history, however, people COULD NOT and DID NOT communicate with people in other parts of the world. Proof of this is in the third picture!
Interpret the third picture and answer the question, "DID EVERYONE DISCOVER FARMING AT THE SAME TIME?" |

Another terrorist attack in Europe.
This one happened in Brussels, Belgium. Brussels Airport is the 21st busiest airport in the world. Two explosions rocked the airport. A third explosion hit a subway station about 7 miles away. So far, 26 people have been confirmed killed (by CNN). This most likely comes as backlash (result) to the capture of Salah Abdeslam - one of the attackers in Paris on November 13 where 130 people were killed at a concert, restaurants and along city streets. What Happened? |

It is often talked about how all Americans came from somewhere else. Whether a few hundred years ago, or more recently, we all have ancestry from somewhere other than North America. So, you'd think in terms of comparison to those old "motherlands" we'd have quite a few similarities ... but, you may be surprised. I've linked an article where you will find
23 different topics where the United States and Europe are compared.
You can choose the two that are most meaningful to you. When you have read your two topics, then respond to my question in Google Classroom.

Unlike most FantasyGeography match-days when you have to wait to see the scoring, today you get it right away. We're going to use today's data about The World's Most Peaceful Countries to work on two skills: 1. making a claim and 2. finding trends.
Link to 5.2 Scoring doc here!
1. CLAIM. You won't find the USA on the World's Most Peaceful Country list until you scroll all the way down to #94. Using the colored chart on page 1, make a claim as to WHY the USA is so low on the Peace chart. Explain yourself in 2-3 sentences.
2. FINDING TRENDS. Use the world map on page 2. Take a moment to understanding the color coding. Then, see if you can find a trend.
Example trend ideas to get yourself started ... Are certain areas of the world more peaceful than others? Are countries near the equator less peaceful? Are small countries more peaceful? Are countries will long coast lines open to attack and less peaceful? Are really peaceful countries all grouped together?

Doubling Time is how we explain the speed at which a country is growing. If a country has a loooooooong Doubling Time, it tells us there is not much growth (just as many people are dying as being born, and not many people are moving to this country). If a country has a short Doubling Time, it's growing really fast. When the total population doubles in number in a very short amount of time, that country is showing strong growth.
Answer the 6 questions below.
Answer the 6 questions below.

Have you ever been sick and needed to go to the doctor? I'm sure most of us have needed medicine, treatment or anything else a doctor can do to help us get better. When that happens, we pay them for what they did. But, is that how it should be?
In some Asian cultures, their system is opposite. When you are sick and need a doctor to help you get better, it's all free. People only pay doctors when they are healthy. To explain why, they say "when a doctor is doing a good job, people are healthy and should pay the doctor; when someone is sick, it's the doctor's job to help them - for free."
Question to respond to: What do you think about this system? How could this system be better than ours in the US? Could anything about the Asian system be bad? Let's throw this topic in for discussion quick before starting Snapshots.

DESCRIBE THE FOLLOWING PARTS OF AMERICAN CULTURE:
1 - Social organization: how is society set up? Are there different levels of society? What decides which level you're in?
2 - Customs and traditions: what common things are done at certain times of the year? Holidays / Celebrations?
3 - Language: what is the primary language? Are there more than one spoken? Are there dialects?
4 - Arts and Literature: what are some of the most famous works of art? Most famous books?
5 - Government: what is the leader called? How is the leader chosen? What role do the people play?
6 - Economy: what do they use for money (if they use money)?
8 - Food: what are a few of the most common dishes/foods?
9 - Clothing: are there types of clothes that are common? Do some outfits suggest certain things about the person?
10 - Entertainment: how do people find entertainment? Is this accessible to everyone?
11 - Sports: are sports and competition a part of this culture? What is the purpose of sports in this culture?

The last couple days we've almost spent the full class period on the bell ringer, and that's OK! But today's is much shorter. You see a picture of the world up ⇡ and it has a circle added to it. Inside that circle (which is primarily India and China), more people live than outside the circle, or in other words, more people live within the circle than everywhere else on the entire globe.
Your question is: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?
Please don't respond with "crazy" "bad" "interesting" or any other simple response. Apply critical thinking and explain what it means, why it's important, what impact could this have.
Write this, of course, in your "Bell Ringer" doc.

Two part Bell Ringer today - interpret a world fertility map and analyze a quote. Answer the questions in YELLOW CAPS.
1. WHAT CONCLUSION(S) CAN WE MAKE ABOUT THIS WOMAN'S CULTURE?
"The link between family size and social standing is a subject close to my heart and goes back to my own childhood in Karakore, a small town in Ethiopia, where I grew up the oldest of seven children. My grandmother had one child, my mother, and I vividly recall the shame that she was made to feel because she had given birth to 'just one child' - and to make it worse, it was a daughter."
